As the Michael album was being put together, it was decided to bring Teddy Riley on board to work on several songs, including “Breaking News,” a song Michael recorded with Eddie Cascio and James Porte in late 2007 while living at the Cascio family home with his children. Riley produced and submitted “Breaking News” to Sony for inclusion on the album. At that time, no one ever mentioned that the vocals we heard on the Cascio songs, which were basically in demo format, might not be Michael. It was known, however, that the background vocals were a combination of Michael and James Porte.

After the tracks were submitted to Sony, three of these Cascio songs were selected to be on the album, and “Breaking News” was one of the three. The day after the submission and selection of the album tracks, for the very first time, the authenticity of Michael’s vocals on the Cascio tracks was questioned.

Because of these questions, I was immediately asked by co-Executors John Branca and John McClain to conduct an investigation regarding the authenticity of the lead vocals on the Cascio tracks.

Six of Michael’s former producers and engineers who had worked with Michael over the past 30 years - Bruce Swedien, Matt Forger, Stewart Brawley, Michael Prince, Dr. Freeze and Teddy Riley - were all invited to a listening session to hear the raw vocals of the Cascio tracks in question. All of these persons listened to the a cappella versions of the vocals on the Cascio tracks being considered for inclusion on the album, so they could give an opinion as to whether or not the lead vocals were sung by Michael. They all confirmed that the vocal was definitely Michael.

Michael’s musical director and piano player on many of his records over a 20-year period, Greg Phillinganes, played on a Cascio track being produced for the album, and said the voice was definitely Michael’s. Dorian Holley, who was Michael’s vocal director for his solo tours for 20 plus years (including the O2 Concert Tour) and is seen in the This Is It film, listened to the Cascio tracks and told me the lead vocal was Michael Jackson.

These are all engineers, producers and musicians who worked on tours and/or in the studio with Michael when he was recording Bad, Thriller, Off The Wall, Dangerous, Invincible, HIStory and Blood On The Dance Floor, and they all reconfirmed their belief that the lead vocals were Michael’s voice on the Cascio tracks.

The Estate then retained one of the best-known forensic musicologists in the nation to listen to the vocals without any instrumental accompaniment (“a cappella”), and to compare them with a cappella vocals from previous Michael songs. This expert performed waveform analysis, an objective scientific test used to determine audio authenticity, on the Cascio tracks, as well as previously released tracks with Michael’s voice, and reported that ALL of the lead vocals analyzed (which included Cascio tracks) were the voice of Michael Jackson.

Sony Music conducted their own investigation by hiring yet a second well-respected forensic musicologist who also compared the a cappella lead vocals from Cascio tracks against previously released vocals of Michael's, and found that Michael’s voice was the on all sets of the raw vocals. The Cascio tracks were also played for two very prominent persons in the music industry who played crucial roles in Michael’s career. Both of these individuals believed that the lead vocals were Michael’s.

Just to be absolutely certain, I also contacted Jason Malachi, a young singer who some persons had wrongfully alleged was a “soundalike” singer that was hired to sing on the Cascio tracks, and I confirmed that he had no involvement with this project whatsoever.

Sony decided that, given the overwhelming objective evidence resulting from the exhaustive investigations outlined above, they wanted to release a record that included three of the Cascio-Porte tracks - because they believed, without reservation, that the lead vocal on all of those tracks were sung by Michael Jackson.

Although there still seem to be concerns being expressed in some quarters about the authenticity of the lead vocals, notwithstanding the opinion of those who worked with Michael, and two independent forensic analysts, ultimately, Michael’s fans will be the judges of these songs, as they always are. We take all fan comments very seriously, and as I’d stated above, there is nothing more important to the Estate than Michael’s music, his legacy and his fans.

Michael’s fans are extraordinary in their quest for accuracy and their passions to raise their voices in a search for truth! We join with them in our care and concern for Michael. We are continuing to follow up with those who have worked in the studio or on tours with Michael, and if any new information comes to light, we will keep you and the fans advised.

It was an unassuming home. Nestled on a quiet neighborhood street in Gary, Indiana, the small, single-story residence was made up of nothing more than two bedrooms, a living room and a kitchen—and a family of 11. Who would have guessed that the close-knit group living in the tiny house would soon become one America's most famous families?

The Jacksons—mother Katherine, father Joe and their children, Rebbie, Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, La Toya, Marlon, Michael, Randy and Janet—lived in that four-room house until the early '70s, shortly after the five oldest sons formed a singing group called the Jackson 5. Under father Joe's strict management, the Jackson entertainment empire was born.

While with the Jackson 5, Michael, the group's rising star, began his solo career and released his LP Thriller in 1982—to date, the best-selling album of all time. He became known around the world as the King of Pop and, despite his tragic death in June 2009, is still recognized by the Guinness World Records as the most successful entertainer of all time.

After the Jackson family became a household name, they packed up and moved into a new, 2-acre estate in Encino, California, which has been their home since 1971. Today, 10 members of the Jackson family live in the home, known as Hayvenhurst, 




including Michael Jackson's mother and his three children, Prince Michael, Paris and Prince Michael II, who goes by the nickname Blanket.

Sitting in the home the Jackson family moved into 40 years ago, Katherine recalls some of her fondest memories of her children growing up within those walls. From Michael and Randy writing 1973's "Dancing Machine" to the children's frequent dance rehearsals, it's clear that Hayvenhurst holds happy memories for this family.

These memories are the subject of Katherine's new book, Never Can Say Goodbye, a tribute to Michael that includes personal stories and never before-seen photographs from his life. Oprah asks Katherine why she wanted to share these stories with the world.

"I wanted to do it for his fans and for the people that misunderstood him," Katherine says.

"Do you think he was misunderstood?" Oprah asks.

"Yes," Katherine says. "I do."

Though Never Can Say Goodbye features many images of Michael throughout the years, Katherine says one image of her son as a little boy is the portrait she has in her mind when she thinks of him.

"I think of my son all through the day, all the time, and I don't like to talk about him because I get all choked up," Katherine says.

She pauses and continues, "A baby in my arms, naming him with my mother. ... That comes to my mind every day. ... And sometimes during the day, I can hear his laughter in my mind."

Michael had many different looks throughout the years, and Katherine says he was insecure about his features—insecurities that stemmed back to his teen years. When Oprah interviewed Michael in 1993, she says he didn't want any pictures of himself as a teenager to be shown. "He thought of himself as ugly," Oprah recalls.

It's something Michael would say to Katherine all the time, she says, but she wasn't able to convince him otherwise. Then, one day, Michael decided to do something about it. "He made up his mind, and he just left [the house]," Katherine says. "And when I inquired about where he was, [he said] he had gone down to get his nose done."

That surgery sparked a series of surgeries that seemed to transform Michael right before his fans' eyes. His nose got smaller and smaller—"like a toothpick," Katherine says.

Katherine says she tried talking to her son about putting an end to the surgeries, but she believes he became addicted and could not stop himself. So, Katherine says she reached out to his plastic surgeon.

"I said [to Michael's plastic surgeon]: 'If he comes there and wants you to work on his nose, just tell him you did it and do the same thing. Don't change it, and just tell him, 'Okay, I've finished,' and that's it,'" Katherine says.

"But they didn't listen to you," Oprah says.

"No," Katherine says. "They should have."

In the midst of Michael's fame, scrutiny and surgeries, he married Lisa Marie Presley in 1994. Katherine, along with the rest of the world, was surprised by the nuptials.

"He called me after he had married her," Katherine says. "He said, 'I'm going to put her on the phone,' and he put her on the phone. I said, 'That's not [Lisa Marie].'"

"Had you met her before?" Oprah asks.

"No, I hadn't met her before," Katherine says.

Despite how quickly the relationship progressed, one thing Lisa Marie knew early on is how much Michael loved his mother, even telling Oprah that his love for Katherine was unconditional and there was nothing he wouldn't do for her.

"Did you feel that?" Oprah asks Katherine.

"Yes, I did," she says. "And everybody I talked to that knew him would tell me the same thing. I felt it too. I truly loved him."

On the day Michael died, Katherine received a phone call from her husband, Joe, telling her someone had been taken from Michael's house in an ambulance. That person was covered with a sheet. At first, Katherine says, she told herself it might not be her son, but in her heart, she knew it was.

Then, she got a call from the hospital, confirming that it was Michael who had been taken away in an ambulance.

Unsure whether he was alive or dead, Katherine arrived at the hospital and waited to learn about her son's condition. "We stayed in there a long time before [the doctor] came in to tell us," she says. "I guess he didn't want to either. But the doctor had to tell us—Dr. Murray."

Dr. Conrad Murray was Michael's personal physician. He's been accused of administering lethal levels of propofol, a powerful anesthetic, and was charged with involuntary manslaughter for his role in Michael's death.

"Dr. Murray told you?" Oprah asks.

"Yes," Katherine says. "He came out, and he was talking. It took him so long. And I'd say: 'Well, what's happened? ... Did he make it?' And he said: 'No. He's gone.' That's all I remember."

Michael's three children, Prince, Paris and Blanket, were also at the hospital that night. While Dr. Murray was telling Katherine of Michael's death, someone else told them. "They were crying," Katherine says. "I thought [Paris] was going to pass out. She was just saying: 'Daddy, I can't make it without you. I want to be with you. I want to go with you.' I felt so bad for them."

That same night, the children went home with Katherine and have been living with her ever since

Soon after Michael's death, an autopsy revealed that a lethal dose of propofol caused him to go into cardiac arrest and die.

Katherine says she was shocked. She knew Michael had trouble sleeping, but she didn't know he may have taken prescription drugs to help him sleep or get through the day. In fact, she says it took her awhile to realize Michael became addicted to painkillers after he suffered severe burns while shooting a Pepsi commercial in 1984.

"Remember when he got burned in the head?" Katherine asks Oprah. "He had been taking those drugs, and it was a long time before I knew he was addicted to them."

When she tried to talk to Michael about his painkiller addiction, Katherine says he denied it. "I was very serious about it," she says. "I was telling him I didn't want to hear one day that he had overdosed, because it would break my heart. But he kept saying he wasn't on anything."

"You didn't believe him," Oprah says.

"No," Katherine says. "I didn't."


Katherine always stood by her son's side even when some supporters turned their backs. In 2005, Michael was on trial for allegedly molesting a minor, intoxicating a minor, abduction, and conspiracy to hold the boy and his father captive at his home, Neverland Ranch. Throughout the entire ordeal, Katherine showed up in court every day to support her son. She never once believed he could be guilty of molesting or hurting a child.

"He loved children," she says. "Michael would always say: 'Mother, why are they accusing me of something I love the most? I'd rather slit my own wrists than to hurt a child.'"

The trial seemed to take its toll on Michael, his mother says, changing who he was as a person.

"He used to trust people," Katherine says. "And after that trial, he didn't trust anybody. ... He would always tell me: 'Mother, I don't trust anybody. The only person I trust is you.'"

Before taking in Michael's children, Katherine says she had a good—but not close—relationship with Prince, Paris and Blanket. "I can't say that I knew them real, real well," she says, "But I knew them well enough. I would always go visit them, and Michael would always talk about them to me."

Katherine also says she did not like it when the children wore veils while out in public with Michael. "I didn't approve of that, but I didn't say anything to him about it," she says. "Then, their biological mother told me it was her idea [to cover them up], not Michael's."

Going from this veiled life to living at their grandmother's with several cousins seems to have been a relatively easy transition for Prince, Paris and Blanket. "They just bonded the minute they got here," Katherine says. "They had a lot of fun."

The man by Katherine's side for the last 60 years—from their two-bedroom home in Gary to their California estate—is her husband, Joe. The two have been married since 1949. Despite rumors of a troubled marriage, both say they are still together and have never filed for divorce.

"She's a wonderful person," Joe says of Katherine. "I think she's too easy with people. She's just like Michael. She's too easy."

Like his wife, Joe says he thinks about Michael every night.

"I just can't picture him gone," Joe says. "Every time I go into some place—a restaurant or a casino or something—his music is playing. ... It brings back memories because I remember the songs. I was at every recording session he ever did."

During his interview with Oprah in 1993, Michael talked about his complicated relationship with his father. He even confessed that he was scared of Joe, saying, "There have been times when he's come to see me, and I would get sick."

"Do you think [Michael] was afraid of you?" Oprah asks Joe.

"I don't think he was afraid of me," Joe says. "Maybe [he was afraid] of doing something wrong, and I'd chastise him. Not beat him. I never beat him."

"He told me that you beat him," Oprah says.

"[Joe] used a strap," Katherine says.

Joe says the way he disciplined his children has kept them out of trouble and out of jail. "Nine kids, never been in jail," he says.

"Do you regret those strappings on your children?" Oprah asks.

"No, because it kept them all out of jail," Joe says. "I raised them right, and they were good kids all the way."

In the Jackson family, a new generation of talent is emerging with Katherine and Joe's grandchildren. Prince Michael, Michael's oldest, says he wants to produce movies and direct when he gets older. Paris says she would like to be an actress and reveals that she used to do improv with her father.

Now that they live with their grandma, Michael's children are adjusting to a new "normal." Until this year, Prince and Paris were home-schooled, and despite some first-day jitters, they say the transition into the classroom has gone well. Blanket, the youngest and shiest of Micheal's children, is still home-schooled.

"You all lived, from what I can gather, a very sheltered, literally veiled life," Oprah says to the children. "Did you know at the time why you were putting on the mask?

Prince answers: "Because then if we went out without our dad, nobody would really recognize us."

"Did you appreciate being behind the veil or mask at the time?" Oprah asks.

"I appreciated it," Paris says.

The public may have been bewildered by some of Michael's parenting decisions, but Paris says she feels like no one understands what a good father he was.

Paris' favorite memories of her father are when the two of them spent quality time together. "One time, we went on the roof [of our house] when we were in Las Vegas, and we just saw the Luxor lights," Paris says. "And sometimes, he would take me to an art museum because we both loved art."

Without hesitation, Prince shares his fondest memory of his father. "We were in Bahrain. We used to wake up early and walk the beach—with Coca-Cola and Skittles or Snickers," he says.

Whether he was cooking breakfast for his kids—"He was a great cook!" Paris says—or protecting them from media scrutiny, Michael left his children with a wealth of happy memories and cherished moments.

"He was just a normal dad," Paris says. "Except for he was, I would say, the best dad ever."

TR = This is my first interview about this topic. Take everything I say seriously. I have been a real friend to Michael Jackson, this record is coming out tomorrow and I'm still haven't gotten paid for this project. Because I did it for Michael Jackson. Not for Sony. Not for the family. Understand what I'm saying and you can read between the lines. Everyone including who we are talking about is bickering and fighting over Michael. It's unimportant, the important thing is to have his legacy going. These vocals are Michael Jackson. All of the people who have been in the studio with Michael for 20 years all the professionals and musicologists went in and they all say it's Michael including me. We worked with Michael, we have been in the studio with Michael. There has been times when Michael didn't even want to be around family and friends. So read between the lines. None of them have been in the studio with Michael for 25 years. None of them. Everyone - exclude Sony - all the people stayed with Michael like Michael Franks who is Michael's right arm like Brett Boxter the guy who always records Michael. All of these people knows Michael's voice. I'm called the finisher because I'm always called at the end of the projects. Michael called me at the end of Invincible. I was called in the end of History including Dangerous I was called in the end and wind up having doing 40-50% of the album. I'm called at the end of every project and I was called at the end of this project because some of the producers that worked on this project had never worked with Michael so they couldn't really figure out what Michael really wanted. They were doing remixes. So when you hear this record you'll hear the records that I worked on. All of a sudden my records that's being scrutinized. It's Michael. And the person who is really trying to stir this up is JM. He challenged me on this record. He is the head of the estate and he challenged me because I said I can't work in this studio I'm not comfortable and I when I left the studio he assigned another producer to mix the same songs that I have worked on and my songs beat him. Now all of a sudden it's not Michael's voice why? Because his songs didn't make it.

Q = So this is a smear campaign
TR= yes it is and the thing is they will lose. Take Sony, take us all, let's go to court. Let's put it on front street and everything the family the estate will be on the front street. And all the truth will come out and you'll see who is right and wrong. It's been going on so long. Michael is the greatest entertainer, greatest person in the whole wide world why would you want to do that to your family? Let the legacy live.

Q= what is your take on the album being released?
TR= My take is keeping the legacy going. How would we keep Michael Jackson the greatest going if we don't have anything. Now I heard 50 records with my own ears. What he would do is go record the first verse and the chorus and he wouldn't do a second verse just to get the idea going. So the next album coming you know I don't want to say too much but the next album coming is a duet album that's gonna be with a lot of great artists because he only did the first verses. It would be great artists with substance. It would be artists that are very creative and great. And I'm going to be a part of that because of my contribution. Even to this album my contribution to this album is not for Sony is not for anyone it's for Michael. The proof is in the pudding I didn't even got a contract. I promise you. They'll streaming it tomorrow. and people will tell you I came on this project because of Michael not anyone else. So when this gentleman told me to come to this project and don't worry it was for him to put his name on my records.

Q= I take you have your attorney's on for tomorrow?
TR= No question. My attorney is the greatest attorney in Atlanta (Joel Katz) so I'm not worried about anything he's the best. All I worry is my friend (MJ) having a great album. When I started the first song they thought that I'll be like the other producers taking 5 -6 days. No I took 5 hours and finished the first song. So when I finished the first song , they thought I'll do one song because a lot producers spent months on one song. Me I came in did it in 5 hours because I knew I had sounds that Michael made us go sample that was his thing sounds. He made us go in the wilderness and sample, go to his zoo and sample lions . Back in the day when they had stereo decks he made us go out sample sounds. He went out to his zoo in Neverland and sampled wild animals. Well that's another story to tell. There's so much friction and people just don't understand family everyone needs to get this legacy going. Like everyone saying "Elvis is still alive" Well you are killing Michael. Why? I wanted to tell you that all that's going on is all about money and everyone is in it for the wrong reasons. Their intentions are wrong.

Q= How did you feel when you were working on this project.
TR= Listen I did everything under the sun cried, sad. Then I came in one day I said the only thing that would make me feel like Michael is here is that I called his photographer Harrison Funk and asked him to come in and bring all the pictures of Michael. I had pictures all around the studio which you can probably see if we do a documentary. So you'll see pictures of Michael all around the studio so that I can feel like he's in the room with me. That was the only thing to keep me sane and not go crazy because you would hear me on the music hitting the keyboards and tears coming out of my eyes.

Q = do you think conspiracy (asking about the album)
TR= Definitely conspiracy. I cannot say directly say it because I signed a nondisclosure agreement. There has been a conspiracy from A to Z. There are people who are doing this for good because they are doing it for the good of the children. There are people who are stopping it because they think good of the children is not in their best interest. ( He declines to comment about Michael's death and conspiracy ).

詞的部份比較沒有爭議
因為MJ之前就出過這種歌曲
有人提出把「Michael Jackson」放在歌詞裏唱
(還自己X2句尾押韻)對此感到刺耳
但有人反駁說Michael在引述八卦媒體的報導時也會引述出自己的全名
並不是自我詆毀,反而是吸睛效果,覺得那些感到刺耳的人有點小題大做

曲的部分....副歌很難琅琅上口(可能還要多聽幾遍
BRIDGE和結尾的地方很薄弱
節奏部應該是最OK的

至於這到底是不是MJ唱的
有他的聲音,但是....經過重製過了
還有招牌聲音的拼貼,(個人覺得這蠻沒格調的拼貼
這是盡全力的MJ嗎?不盡然....所以要強化聲音
到底這個扭曲過的MJ是百分之幾的MJ呢?反正不是100%
不是100%那麼80%甚至更低,低到多少才算是假呢??
我不至於覺得這首歌裏全然沒有MJ的存在
雖說MJ成份只是低了些...可是這還是MJ

私心以為
會被SONY挑上只是因為歌詞題材是講媒體的,很有戲
如果是MJ三思之後可能不會挑上這首歌的,
還不夠銳利,還不夠成為大賣,聲音還不夠戲劇化
(放一邊涼快去,三年後再來看看還是丟一旁,改頭換面玩一玩又丟一旁
有些歌就是先天不良,很難讓他滿意,
所以他才會有這麼多的DEMO

有網友說了
假如專輯裏首首都是像這樣
即使是百分之一千的MJ作品
也會慘賣(首週20萬,世界總銷量800萬...會不會太少了

那些說是別人代唱的人,讓我想起...

蘭嶼達悟族人與台東南王部落卑南族人,一海一山,文獻上,僅四十年有過一次宗教交流;四十年後,兩族將再度「交流」,非關宗教,而是為了抓鼠。

蘭嶼野鼠為患,但達悟族人討厭鼠,不擅長抓鼠,眼見島上作物遭野鼠啃食,氣得心頭冒火卻束手無策,甚至有族人不甘心血被吃光,乾脆棄耕。

台東南王部落的卑南族人有捕食野鼠傳統,動保法實施後,可抓得動物少了,野鼠成了族人的主食之一。每年部落大獵祭,族人上山,一次就能抓得上千隻野鼠。

多數討海的達悟族人,厭鼠不會抓,決定跨海求援,請活躍山區的卑南捕鼠高手登島「技術指導」;將帶隊前往的卑南青年南彥吉說,「沒獵過蘭嶼野鼠,不曉得好不好吃。」

蘭嶼野鼠近一年來暴增,外觀與在地的小野鼠不同,鄉民目測有的野鼠甚至超過半斤,因不擅長抓鼠,無法確定品種。但鄉公所秘書黃正德懷疑,超肥的野鼠應是外來種,可能是風災後隨漂流木到蘭嶼。

他表示,入侵的野鼠,已在島上六個部落造成「災情」,島上主要栽培的地瓜、芋頭、山藥,還沒收成就先被啃光。

鄉公所日前到南王部落請求協助,卑南族人本月四日將由部落青年會副會長南彥吉率領八人團隊入島滅鼠,也是兩族四十年來第二度「交流」。

外來種 全島入侵

【記者董俞佳/屏東縣報導】蘭嶼老鼠為患啃光作物,屏科大野生動物保育中心主任裴家騏說,蘭嶼是全台生態系統最特殊的地方,任何外來種在蘭嶼都很容易造成「全島入侵」,影響會比其他島嶼嚴重。

裴家騏強調,外來種入侵後不容易清除,「快速反應、快速了解,快速動作,是抑止外來鼠群最好的方法。」蘭嶼面積小且是低平海島,沒有高山可保護原生種不被外來種入侵;外來種沒有天敵很容易擴大族群。

「蘭嶼老鼠確有可能因風災漂洋過海而來」,裴家騏說,只要驗島上老鼠遺傳基因,就可知道來源。

     往來出入在這半徑方圓5.7公里、匯聚了島內最多書店與咖啡館的台北盆地。儘管最近幾年台灣書業出版界盛傳「景氣寒冬」之說日益甚囂塵上,城市裡總還是不乏有人無畏現實殘酷而不斷前仆後繼地投入「開書店」往火坑裡去。回顧十幾年來台北城市獨立書店變遷的文化史,滿是承繼、掙扎及幻滅,無異一段段生命不捨圓夢的奮進之路,但同時又滿載自嘲、悲情與遺忘。

     書店在城市裡,就像是一段段被傳唱的故事。

     從上世紀二○年代初在日治期間獨立設市迄今不到百來年歷史的台北城,隨著一股亟欲吸收外來文化以及謀求工商業發展太過快速更替的時間之流,許多即將面臨衰敗的老街區在短短數年內徹底被迫更換成了一副陌生的青春容顏,無論是七○年代因應道路拓寬規劃遷移舊書攤的牯嶺街,抑或見證了世紀末三十年老台北歲月風華(於2006年拆遷)的光華橋地下商場,就連早期六○年代曾經作為台灣書業重心、繼八○年代過後店面裝潢連年翻新的重慶南路這條老字號書店街看在不少資深愛書人士眼中也都挾有一份難以言喻的蒼然古味。

     舊時的老商圈店鋪拆除殆盡,換來與捷運共構的新建築。幾乎所有關於對這城市的往事追憶和老街巷弄裡尋常人家的眾聲喧嘩,到了最後也就都自然而然地沉澱到這些書店的紙頁間。

     相較於中國北京或日本京都這些東方現代千年古都,在近代城市發展史上仍屬年輕的台北予人遲暮之感格外鮮明,城市裡太多突如其來的迅疾驟變不留下任何記憶殘痕,只停格在所謂懷舊題材影視劇的情節想像之中。

     當一處城市空間充滿了喜新厭舊,那便是「誰也不記得誰」。偶然翻閱六年前(2004)晨星出版社彙編《台灣書店地圖》所刊載全台書店名錄,訝然驚覺其中就有不少特色書店如今已是不存在了。我幾乎可以扳著手指數出許多名字:桂冠書局、FNAC法雅客書店、東海書苑、木心書屋、草葉集概念書店,多少年來這些書店隱身在台灣城鎮大街小巷默默地守候著寂寞散播著書香,直到有一天它們突然宣告消失,只來得及在幾個熟悉的讀者心頭留下一個悵然的背影。

     每在一家書店歇業隱遁之後,誰又知道那些被遺棄的書籍的下落?

     因為開了一家書店,所以美好

     人的生活方式有多少種,書店的城市表情就有多少種。

     作為所有一切故事的起點,何妨熟悉一座城市首先從它的書店開始。今年初春四月看過美籍台灣導演陳駿霖執導溫馨小品電影「一頁台北」(Au Revoir Taipei),乍然有感於劇情當中雖是終究免不了搭上癡情男子來到誠品書店邂遘結識美女店員的這麼一齣老梗,但它畢竟還是相當程度地滿足了絕大多數普通讀者、都會雅痞族對於書店空間所抱持那份預期揮之不去的浪漫綺想。特別是片中最後一幕男女主角在書店共舞的場景,背景音樂緩緩流洩出那一曲甜美甘潤的「Moondance」爵士小提琴弦音隨風搖擺欲語還休,似乎也隱然應和著台北現實生活痴男怨女文藝青年們有意無意間早把誠品書店當作一處顯露文化品味以便彼此媒合相互兜搭的好地方。

     試想,一個清純帶有書卷氣的靚女子拿著張愛玲或朱天文的小說在書架間徘徊,青山襯朱顏,多麼令人賞心悅目的一幅書店風景!為了書裡書外的顏如玉,怎能不多逛書店多念幾本書呢?

     依照香港專欄作家馬家輝的說法,港島當地特色小書店大約以每五年為一循環,意味著即便其中一家將要關門倒閉了,不久後必定又會有另一家懷抱理想熱血的新書店再起爐灶。宛如山林野草般,台灣南北城鎮大小獨立書店也就彷彿周而復始地同樣死了一批又新生一批。

     三年前(2007),我從重新橋跳蚤書市友人Booker口中得知北投地區將要新開一家舊書店,位在鄰近陽明大學、地處天母北投兩地往來捷徑的立農街上,名曰「蘭臺藝廊」。女主人May自云從事稅務及地政工作多年,卻因始終忘情不了童年時在父親引領下遨遊書海的甜蜜舊夢,所以才開設了這家夢想中的書店,除以鬻書生活為樂之外還不時兼作藝文展覽。室內約莫只十來坪的書店雖小,卻有著難得一見整面明亮精緻的大片臨街櫥窗。後來我陸續幾度造訪了「蘭臺」,也確實在這兒淘到了不少寶,記得包括蔡琴的絕版黑膠唱片《火舞》、廖未林設計封面的舊版小說《多色的雲》,以及台北縣文化中心未曾對外發行的《江文也紀念音樂會》全套錄音專輯等幾乎都是從「蘭臺」得來的收獲。

     及至去年(2009)秋天,嗔愛戀書之人在台北開書店的「美事」又再增添一樁,城南青田街巷弄裡靠近「蠹行古書店」不遠處從此多了一間「青康藏書房」。每當提起開店的初衷因緣,書房主人何新興大抵也是為了將來從媒體工作退休之後準備好好「賺它一筆美好的生活」,並以盡情實踐年輕時未能完成的文化理想,因而選擇在人生後半階段與書為伍,品茗話書、其樂悠悠,至於「開書店究竟賠不賠錢」這等掃興問題,我想最終也就只得交由香港抗世詩人吾友陳智德最新出版發表的一部詩集名稱來回應了:

     《市場去死吧》!讓我們從此理直氣壯地宣稱。

     明知其不可為而為,面臨(抵抗)無所不在的商業壓力卻仍不放棄理想,難道竟是眼下大台北地區獨立個性書店以身殉美的共同宿命?只是不知若干年後,屆時還會有多少人能依戀那曾經分據城市邊緣南北一隅依舊堅持在低迷世道中苦撐的「小小」與「有河BOOK」。

     不大記得有沒有人這麼說過:決定「開書店」當下的心理狀態多多少少也就像追逐「一夜情」,因為兩者同樣都是基於「一時衝動」。

     書店以內,祕境之外

     了解一座城市其實遠沒有我們想像的那樣簡單。發現一處城市的隱秘部分並不在於它本身是否神秘,而在於人們能否經常以一種陌生眼光與心情來看待那些似曾相識的熟悉地方。隨處遍佈住商混合的華街陋巷,構成了台北城市街道引人入勝的獨特魅力,得以令你在熟悉和陌生之間有太多被縱容的新舊細節可供回味。

     不少難得撥冗來台的香港背包客、大陸學者專家等外地人士,一到了台北,行程中總不免指名要走訪一趟24小時不打烊營業的誠品書店,尤其是在夜半時分眼見一大群人仍窩在書店裡閱讀的奇妙景象,每每讓許多這些熱愛閱讀的海外華人感到著迷不已。

     未曾久居台灣的異鄉客,僅僅走進門面光鮮、可供購齊大量書種的誠品敦南或信義旗艦店,便自以為見識到了所謂名聞遐邇的台北書店風景。殊不知,對於本地書蠹圈內識途老馬來說,越是開在小街小巷裡那些頗為雅致精巧的書店,其實才是真能讓人悠閒遊逛兼顧淘書樂趣的一處隱秘花園書天堂。舉凡溫州街、汀洲路、師大路、龍泉街一帶的書店大都保有些內斂的純樸古風,無論周邊城市建設如何擴張變化,在我印象中這些書店彷彿總是予人置身小城的感覺。

     遙想光陰荏苒書緣嬗遞,不知不覺地,驀然回首今日的誠品幾乎已不再是十多年前的誠品了!

     過去曾作為台灣閱讀文化標竿而自傲的誠品書店,這些年來越來越標榜自身的品味和價值,但是卻沒有察覺讀者的生態和消費行為已經逐漸轉移,只是不斷利用「誠品」這個文化品牌來收取高額的上架門檻和商場租金抽成,看在許多愛書人士眼裡不啻愈覺像是個注重外表甚於實質的世族門閥,儘管手中掌有優渥的財力與物質環境,反倒唯獨少了一股追求創新進步的精神根基,幾欲悖離了當初主動替愛書人發掘好書、拓展多元閱讀視野的那份純然心意。

     雖說商業化本身並非罪惡,畢竟開店做生意就是要賺錢。然而當誠品變成企業,只是標榜一家什麼都有賣、到處以五彩繽紛的商品折扣活動文宣裝扮得比較漂亮的書店,它彷彿也就成了「電子情書」裡街角書屋女主人Meg Ryan嘲諷福斯連鎖書業大亨Tom Hanks就像「販賣大桶廉價橄欖油」的「批發商」!

     畢竟「開書店」在台灣仍是個時髦高尚的行業

     回顧十幾年來台北城市獨立書店變遷的文化史,滿是承繼、掙扎及幻滅,無異一段段生命不捨圓夢的奮進之路,但同時又滿載自嘲、悲情與遺忘。

     每一談起「開書店」面臨排山倒海的現實困境,似乎不管到了任何時代都是一樣。我們當然明白經營書店其實也是一盤生意,書店可以賣各種各樣的書,什麼樣的書都會有人買有人讀,這就是資本主義市場經濟底下所謂的文化自由。

     對於那些許許多多曾經起心動念還是決定想要開書店的新鮮人來說,雖然我們實在無法確知將來市場上有沒有可能會出現《第一次開書店就上手》或《打造人氣書店》這類暢銷秘笈來幫忙消災解厄,但我們絕對能夠臆測到的是,那些真的已經「下海」投身鬻書事業之人,肯定都看過或至少聽說過英國女作家 Penelope Fitzgerald寫作長篇小說《書店》而被其中那句堅定而無畏的開場白所感染:

     「我就是想開一家書店」。

     大概也就是因為這麼一句意氣昂揚滿懷憧憬的愛書宣言,其影響所及,台灣現今某些的獨立書店在媒體公眾面前總是難以避免呈現出一種近乎「雖千萬人,吾往矣」的「悲情」姿態,特別是Fitzgerald在小說結尾油然感嘆「連一個小鎮都容不下一間小小書店」簡直成了時下許多獨立書店業者在潛意識裡不自覺地加速悲情氣氛發酵的一齣想像文本。

     「如果有一天這些書店被迫關門,究竟是誰該羞愧呢」?事實上,我們並不難在國內外有關獨立書店報導篇幅當中經常讀到像這樣帶有強烈暗示性的情緒喊話,相較於其他各行業,很少有哪門子買賣生意能像「書店」為了嚮往某些崇高理念而大張旗鼓對外尋求社會奧援來抵抗資本主義主流市場,彷彿愈是鬧得轟轟烈烈以關門歇業悲劇落幕,相對就愈是能夠藉此贏得更多的掌聲與光環,你能說「開書店」在台灣社會難道還不算是一門時髦高尚的文化行業嗎?

初版二刷

「你都怎麼吃吐司啊?」
我和朋友曾經很熱烈地討論過這個話題。

「我只塗乳瑪淋!」
「奶油乳酪隨便抹一抹就很好吃囉」
「我都是放一顆煎蛋在上面,然後把吐司折起來吃」
「還有人把納豆放在上面吃呢」

哇!光吐司就有這麼多各式各樣的吃法,實在是太令人佩服了。
以前的我吃吐司的方法很簡單,只會在吐司上塗乳瑪淋,
不然就換換蜂蜜或果醬而已。
所以當一聽到大家的吃法都這麼與眾不同時,還覺得挺訝異的。

其實本來就是這樣嘛。
吐司的吃法通常會因每個人的喜好和點子的不同,
而產生出許許多多特殊的配方。
「那樣會好吃嗎?」當然也有很多人會去嚐試一些連自己也感到疑惑的食材,
拿來搭配吐司一起吃。好吃?或不好吃?其實因人而異。不過當我一想到大家原來也這麼努力地在研究「怎麼樣讓吐司更好吃」,就覺得非常有意思。

「這個放在吐司上不知道好不好吃呢?我看馬上就來試試看吧!」

莊祖宜:吃在當地 一樣有創意

我剛到香港知名的Amber餐廳做學徒時,曾忍不住問荷蘭來的大廚:「為什麼我們用的生鮮食材幾乎全是歐洲進口的?這樣成本不會太高嗎?」

大廚無奈地回答說,其實他早先接下這份工作時,本也滿懷壯志的想採納當地食材做創意變化,比方用法式手法呈現附近海域的石斑魚,結果並不受歡迎。調查後發現,原來客人們花大錢上置地文華酒店的法國餐廳,就是要吃「純正的法國菜」,所以他們寧可以天價單點空運進口的多佛鰈魚、多寶魚、地中海鱸魚,也不要吃此地常見的新鮮海魚。幾番掙扎後,大廚乾脆全盤引進他在歐洲熟悉的上好材料,連蔬菜水果幾乎都是以本地幾倍價錢買來的法國和荷蘭貨,反正方便自己也討好客人,一個願打一個願挨嘛!

不過除了追求奢華享樂之外,也有許多人購買進口貨的出發點是很純樸良善的,只可惜在我看來還是有點矯枉過正。比如我之前有位鄰居為了支持「有機」,寧可去超市花十八元港幣買一小株泛黃半萎的澳洲進口有機香菜,也不要附近菜場裡兩塊錢一大把的本地新鮮貨。另外我常見許多外國太太們在超市裡搶購四片定價一百六十八港幣的美國進口有機雞胸,對五十塊一隻的華南土雞卻視若無睹,讓我在為他們的荷包痛心之餘也無限感慨。

其實有機耕作的本意除了照顧食用者的身體健康,有很大的目的是為了減少化肥與農藥對環境造成的汙染碳化。如果為了堅持有機而一味購買由遠處運來的食品,光是運輸用的油燃料消耗就足以抵銷原本保護環境生態的美意。況且生鮮食物經過長途運送,碰撞受損不說,營養和新鮮度也大打折扣,味道往往比不上本地的同類食材,反而得不償失。

兩個月前我從香港搬到上海,一開始對大陸所謂的「黑心食品」有許多顧忌,以為從此非得忍痛購買進口食材,放棄我向來力求吃在當地也盡量顧全有機的原則。幾番尋訪奔走後發現,其實此地也有許多非常優秀的食材。

市郊一帶如松江、奉賢和浦東外圍於近年開闢了不少有機農家,中西式瓜果香草選擇繁多,市區內也不時有小型的有機農夫市集。小菜場裡有傳統堆肥種植的蔬菜— 杭白菜、雞毛菜、薺菜、毛豆、萵苣…,光是買來拎在手上都讓我過足了江南婦人的癮。乾貨店裡有金華的火腿、天目山的扁尖、黃山的黑木耳、或是更遠一點如寧夏的蜂蜜、新疆的紅棗…,處處可見歐洲人講究的「terroir」風情—也就是地緣氣候土壤與人文歷史交織後對食材的獨特影響,讓我這個熱愛變花樣的廚子看了躍躍欲試,撩起許多對傳統的遐思與新鮮的靈感想像。

前陣子我聽人介紹,說上海新開的Madison餐廳裡有位紐約來的華裔主廚是個勵行吃在當地的「locavore」,一切食材幾乎都是主廚本人在中國各地尋尋覓覓得來的,如大連的和牛、內蒙的羔羊,舟山一帶的海魚等等。這消息讓我看了眼睛一亮,跑去品嘗後更是大呼驚艷—沙拉裡有茼蒿和豇豆,前菜裡有雲南的橄欖和上海當地製作的馬茲瑞拉乳酪,去骨的本地三黃雞煎的香脆酥嫩,配菜裡有一般西餐裡從來見不到的龍豆…,一切吃起來新鮮又搭調。所以誰說進口的一定比較好,做西餐又非得用「正宗」西式材料呢?用心選擇的吃在當地不只支持本地農業並減少運輸消耗,可也是開闊口味,發揮創意的好機會啊!(作者為廚房裡的人類學家)
